Common Causes of Lower Back Pain

Last updated 3 years ago

Lower back pain is one of the most common back conditions. For this reason, patients often have the misconception that they can treat it through medicine and stretching. However, in the absence of proper treatment, minor lower back pain can become more serious, resulting in severe back problems in the long run. Here are some common causes of lower back pain:

  • Sciatica
The name “sciatica” comes from the long nerve that runs from the lower back through the leg, called the sciatic nerve. When the sciatic nerve is irritated, it can result in numbness and pain in the lower back and throughout the legs. There are several potential factors that can result in irritation of the sciatic nerve, so it is important to get examined by a chiropractor if you experience this condition.
  • Injury or Overuse
Injury and overuse are two of the most common causes of lower back pain. Whether you have been playing sports or doing some heavy lifting, there is always the potential for injury. In addition, overuse can wear out the ligaments and joints that keep your spine aligned, resulting in vertebrae moving more than they should. When one of the vertebrae becomes misaligned, the spinal nerves become compressed, causing lower back pain. Traditional treatment like heat pads and medicine may provide temporary relief, but a chiropractor will be able to find the cause of your lower back pain and provide the correct treatment.
  • Herniated Disc
The vertebrae of your spine are cushioned with round, flat discs. If these discs are damaged, they might break or become inflamed, causing a herniated disc. Herniated discs, like misaligned vertebrae, can also be caused by overuse.
